Reflection #1: Hills Like White Elephants

The story “Hills like White Elephants” of Ernest Hemingway is a short story that begin with an American and a girl who began a conversation talking about she is seeing a white elephant in the hills, then the American answers her saying to her “ It's really an awfully simple operation, Jig.... It's not really an operation at all.". The author doesn’t expose directly the subject of the conversation but with those quotes from the story the reader can conclude that the subject is that the girl is pregnant ( referring to the shape of the hills and the white elephant as the stretch marks during the pregnancy ) and they are thinking to make an abortion (referring to “simply operation”). The last is example of that the story have irony and “psychological games” because both characters never say directly what they think about the pregnancy; for example when the girl make the unusual comparison of the hills with her pregnancy it could mean that she is thinking about that constantly and maybe she is insecure about doing the abortion and also having second thoughts. But the American answers : “'…if you don't want to you don't have to. I wouldn't have you do it if you didn't want to. But I know it's perfectly simple.”; he demonstrate irony because doesn’t say no but is trying to persuade the girl to do the operation. Later the girl answers him: “Then I'll do it. Because I don't care about me.”, she could demonstrates that if she do the operation is because he said it, but she is not secure and maybe she said that with the hope that he will say no to the operation because something is bothering in her mind. The end of the story is inconclusive and the reader can think his/hers own end. My end is that the girl continues with the pregnancy and they broke their relationship because the American is a playboy. What do you think is the end of this short story?
